Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet

Winemaker Profile | Burgundy, France

The Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet, in family ownership for at least seven generations, traces its roots back to the late 18th century with François Berthaut in Fixin. The vineyards of the Berthaut and Gerbet families were united through the marriage of Denis Berthaut and Marie-Andrée Gerbet. Their daughter, Amélie Berthaut, took over the estate in 2013, supported by her husband Nicolas Faure, who previously worked at renowned wineries such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

With approximately 16 hectares of vineyards, the Domaine spans the villages of Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Vosne-Romanée. The vineyards include both Village and Premier Cru sites, such as Fixin "Les Crais," Gevrey-Chambertin "Clos des Chezeaux," and Vosne-Romanée "Les Suchots." The main grape variety is Pinot Noir, complemented by a small production of Chardonnay.

The philosophy of the estate emphasizes sustainable viticulture with minimal intervention to preserve the authenticity of the terroir. Amélie Berthaut highlights the importance of work in the vineyard and care for the soil. An inscription carved in stone at the estate reads: "Bien faire vax miev que dir," which translates to "Actions speak louder than words."
